POS Newsletter Blurb - 2010
Were you aware that in New York State, the tobacco industry spends approximately $1.1 million per day to market its products? As a result, our residents, including those under the age of 18, are exposed to a substantial amount of tobacco marketing.
Tobacco companies continue to advertise in ways that reach our youth. Currently these marketing strategies involve using tobacco displays as an advertising tool. Research tells us that these advertising methods have an effect on youth smoking behaviors. Every year in NY almost 21,000 kids under 18 become new daily smokers. Removing tobacco displays from their view is an easy way to help save many youth from facing early death and disease from tobacco use.
The Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island (TAC) is one of 34 community partnerships funded by the NYS Department of Health’s Tobacco Control Program. TAC is working with state partners to educate New Yorkers on the prevalence and impact that tobacco product displays and store advertising have on youth smoking initiation. Which item doesn’t belong?
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of death and disease in New York, killing nearly 25,000 people a year. Nearly 90% of regular smokers started smoking before the age of 18. Every year in New York nearly 36,000 children begin smoking.
The research is clear about the harmful effects of tobacco use. Despite theses facts, pharmacies and stores with pharmacies continue to sell these deadly and highly addictive products alongside medications utilized to improve one’s health. Pharmacists are one of the most trusted health care professionals and an important part of the health care team. Customers look to pharmacists for information promoting health and wellness. Tobacco sales in pharmacies send a contradictory message to our youth.
