Clinicians have a unique opportunity to intervene with patients who use tobacco.  Smokerscite a physician's advice to quit as an important motivator to stopsmoking. In 2000, the U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesPublic Health Service produced an updated Clinical Practice Guidelineentitled Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence.  Itcontains strategies and recommendations to assist clinicians indelivering and supporting effective treatments for their patients.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits are available on the New York State Smokers' Quitsite for Smoking Cessation with Adult Patients.

Other tools forclinicians including cessation materials for patients, health providerquit kits, the Fax-to-Quit program and information about how to obtainfree nicotine replacement therapy are available from the New York State Smokers' Quitsite.



Chemical Dependency Treatment Providers have taken up the challenge to address tobacco dependence in their programs.  The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Providers of New York State have recently launched the New York State Tobacco Dependence Resource Centerto assist providers in taking this important step to address nicotineaddiction with their clients. Research papers, training opportunitiesand other resources are available on the site.



Teachers, Counselors and Youth Workers can obtain information on identifying best practices for tobacco cessation for adolescents at

Helping Young Smokers Quit.  Thisis a national program supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National CancerInstitute.



Health Professionals and Community Educators can take an on-line course from the New York State Smokers' Quitsite on How to Run a Stop Smoking Program.

The National Networks for Tobacco Control and Prevention announces the launch of its new website, www.TobaccoPreventionNetworks.org a one stop shop for all priority population tobacco control information.
Thewebsite is the first of its kind to feature strategies and tools thatcan be used as a guide and adapted for any population. Topics include:

  • Eliminating disparities and achieving parity
  • Capacity Building
  • Implementing cessation
  • Protecting the public from secondhand smoke exposure
  • And many more!
The site also features case studies and training modules, online referencematerials, and a calendar section highlighting tobacco control eventsthroughout the year.
